Defective Sprinkler Solenoid. Irrigation valve solenoids fail in many different ways. If the plunger sticks in the open position the valve will stay open, but this is relatively uncommon. More often the coil in the solenoid either shorts out (too low of resistance) or breaks (too high of resistance.) In older fused controls a shorted solenoid will pop the fuse and turn off the sprinkler timer. In newer non-fused controllers the short will cause a message like “error” to appear on the screen. If the solenoid coil breaks generally you will not know unless you check all the sprinkler zones or you notice a drying area in your yard. To determine whether the solenoid is bad, use an ohm meter. A good solenoid will read between 20 – 60 ohms at the controller. If it is under 20 ohms you probably have a short, although in my experience they tend to fail at 10 ohm,s or less. A broken solenoid will generally read in the hundreds of ohms.

Bad Irrigation Wire Splice. First, check the poer to the non working valve at the sprinkler timer. It should read 26 – 30 volts. A bad splice will read on your ohm meter the same as a bad solenoid except usually higher in the 1000’s of ohms. The first place to look is in the sprinkler valve box. Discount the valve from the control wires and check the solenoid with your ohm meter. If it reads good, turn on that station with the wires still disconnected , and check the voltage. It should read 26 -30 volts. Turn the station off, connect the wires without wire nuts, turn the station back on. Read the voltage again. If the voltage is still correct then the problem is either the valve is mechanically frozen shut or the solenoid is bad. If the voltage has dropped significantly then you have a partial wire connection somewhere upstream that is limiting the voltage to the valve.
